This piece was going to be our end of year final piece of work which determines a large percentage of our grades. It's kind of challenging but nerve wrecking at the same time.
The theme I chose was "Barriers"... And so the brainstorming sessions starts...
This was a mind map I came up with and basically just throwing it what I could think of at that time... Not very colorful as some of you might like it, but that is just how I roll^^
The fortress acts as a barrier for both ways - not letting enemies in and also preventing people from going out. It can be the strongest defense when whole but is the weakest when even a single rock comes loose.
The armour worn by the woman serves as a purpose to hide the actual fragile person inside. The helmet also serves to hide her facial expressions to prevent others from knowing how she feels. Both acts as a barrier to shield her weaknesses and fear from others.
Another version of a female warrior, but this time with the helmet removed to better show the female features. Also a sword is held in her hands unsheathed as if waiting for the battle to begin. Yet again, the armour is a symbol of a barrier hiding the weak, fragile woman inside. (reference from Saber - Fate Stay Night)
The naked girl is curled up as if to protect herself from external harm. Her hair, being rather "sharp" and spread out seems to tell others to "keep out!" In a way, she is trying desperately to protect the vulnerable self.
Time is extremely important in our life, especially for a girl who worries about her beauty and youth. There is only so much time for one to stay young and beautiful. Therefore, the hourglass acts as a symbol of fragility of time itself and how a girl wishes to protect her youth.
Initial Idea (not successful)
The fortress gate blocks the view of the warrior, making the art piece seem a lack of focus. Problem of what was "shut in" and what was "shut out" also raised.
Suggestions: Warrior to be placed in front of the fortress, as if guarding it. Naked girl and hour glass placed behind gate to be protected.
Road blocks are probably one of the most common barriers we encounter in life. This scene shows how a barrier has been put between the viewer and the city. As cities are usually seen as a place of hope and opportunities, the road blocks are preventing people from reaching it.
Applying the previous idea into the boundaries of the fortress as well as including the curled up girl behind the gate.
Concept: The girl symbolizes vulnerability of females and needs to be protected. The city, as mentioned before, symbolizes the subject's future and career full of hope and opportunity, therefore the need the protect it as well.
The houses and the city in the distant are confined behind the fortress gate showing the need for protection. The houses symbolizes the people dear to the subject while the city symbolizes the future.
Similar to the previous two concepts with the addition of flying photographs. It gives a desolated feel to show the desperation to protect the family, friends and the city.
In colour form...
This piece was simply an experiment of different ways to colour/shade the piece or work.
And my FINAL piece of work after all those prep work!
